Competition Categories and Details

Teams

In all categories teams may consist of up to three members.

For some of the categories, copies of questions from the 2005, 2004, 2003 and 2002 competitions are available as a guide.

Text Based Languages

This category is for students able to program in any of the above text based languages - no 4GL languages are permitted. Generally some set tasks will be presented and teams will need to complete as many as possible in the allotted time.

GUI/Windows Based Languages

This category is for experienced programmers in any of the above languages. Programs will have a graphical user interface and will generally involve the completion of a large programming project in the allotted time.

Web Page Design

This category involves the use of hand-coding or web authoring tools to create a static website meeting the requirements of a provided brief. The minimum skill level required is the ability to place text and images on a page and to link several pages together. Judging will take into account both functionality and visual design.

Robotics

Students entering the Robotics category will need to have a robust construction vehicle with a light sensor. You may bring a constructed robot, but be prepared to make modifications when you are given the challenge. You will be able to design and construct the robot on the day as well. You will need to bring a computer and software to be able to program the robot to perform a task. There are restrictions on the size of the robot allowed. Please check back to see final rules two weeks before the competition. You will be competing in the given age groups.

At the widest points (when fully extended if using moving parts) the robot must be no more than: 18cm high, 18cm wide and 20cm long.

Desktop Publishing

This category involves teams completing a suitable publication based on a given theme in the allotted time. Minimal typing is required, and all images etc. are provided.

Multimedia Presentations

Teams in this category must create an electronic presentation, for example using Microsoft Powerpoint, based on a theme given during the briefing. Projects must make full use of text, images and sound.

Movie Making

Teams will be given a topic and have two hours in which to shoot, edit and render a short movie. Teams will need video camera(s) and a compatible computer capable of capturing, editing and showing the finished movie.
